This year’s Brazilian Grand Prix had race fans on the edges of their seats until the very end, and the final race of the 2008 Formula One series appeared for a time to be Felipe Massa’s. However, a last minute effort by Lewis Hamilton resulted in his becoming the world’s first black Formula One champion.

Lewis Hamilton fans were elated when he secured first place at the China Grand Prix in Shanghai. He had been predicted by many Formula One watchers as the front-runner. Hamilton needed that win to be in the running for World Champion heading into the Brazilian Grand Prix.

His two year career with Formula One has been fraught with high hopes and subsequent disappointments. His association with the sport and team McLaren actually began long before his induction to Formula One. Lewis Hamilton began as one of the first drivers to receive instruction in the Young Driver Support Programme. The school was started in 1998 as a joint effort between McLaren and Mercedes-Benz. Hamilton was just 13 at the time.

His rookie season looked promising at the start. He had nine podium finishes in a row and four first-place finishes. It wasn’t quite enough in the end though. The 2007 Grand Prix season saw Lewis Hamilton take the runner up position to World Champion Kimi Raikkonen. Still, it was an impressive finish for the British rookie.

His fans waited eagerly to see if he could step it up in 2008. He took five first-places in the season. He narrowly missed a sixth in Belgium. Hamilton was at first declared the winner, only to have his title stripped from him. He lost his ranking at the Belgian Grand Prix due to an illegal manoeuvre. He cut a chicane late in the race. The act got him demoted to third place.

He also narrowly missed a win in Japan in October. Lewis Hamilton had been the favored racer. Instead he managed to earn a disappointing 12th place, thanks to a penalty. His loss in Japan narrowed the gap to a small margin between him and rival Felipe Massa.

It was Massa who sped to a first place finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix, the season’s final race. It appeared initially that Massa, who also had an impressive season, would take the World Championship according to many popular blogs

Fortunately for Lewis Hamilton he was able to overtake the fifth place drive on the final lap. It was just enough to squeeze out Massa. He beat Massa by a mere one point.

Lewis Hamilton set more than driving records this season. He isn’t just Formula One’s first black champion. The 23-year-old will go down in history as the youngest driver to win the series.

Hamilton will likely spend a few weeks reveling in his newfound status. His name, after all, has been uttered in the same sentence as David Beckham’s as of late. His star will be shining bright when he returns home to England for some much needed and deserved rest. His brilliant performance and last-minute manoeuvre at the Brazilian Grand Prix will be remembered for years to come with F1 fans.

Hopes of a championship win were centred on Red Bull’s Mark Webber, or Ferari’s Fernando Alonso, at the final race on 14th November. There was also an outside chance of Mc Laren’s Lewis Hamilton taking the crown.

But it wasn’t to be. Sebastian Vettel led from the beginning, but it was clear that Lewis was very close, and challenging him all the time. That was until Lewis pitted, and then came out into traffic. He was held up , which enabled Vettel to consolidate his lead,whilst  Webber and Alonso also ran into problems, and could not get high  enough up the field.

By the time everyone had made their pit stops, Lewis regained second position, but Vettel had a very comfortable lead. It is to his credit that with a clear track ahead of him, Lewis became much faster, and narrowed the gap between them, but there was just not enough laps left for him to  challenge Vettel again.

It could have been a much more interesting race if he had not been held up, because his speed was certainly there, and I think the ruling should be that no-one can opportune pit stops, which only serves to ruin the race.

   Vettel is now World Champion, and also the youngest, previously Lewis was the youngest after winning in 2008. There will be much celebrating by the Red Bull Team, as they have a double win after also winning the Constructors Championship.

Lewis Hamilton was a happy F1 driver as he openned a bottle of champagne on the winners rostrum after winning the Belgian Grand Prix – only to be dropped to third place after officials decided he made an illegal move to secure victory.

The reason judges demoted him from first to third place? An illegal manoueuvre helped Lewis overtake the front runner, Kimi Raikkonen. However, Lewis ceded Raikkonen’s position shortly after cutting the chicane. Lewis went on the cross the finish line in first place to take the Belgian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton’s victory for Team McLaren was short-lived though. Hamilton was demoted from first to third place for cutting the chicane. It was an end-of-race rain shower that caused Hamilton to slide off the track. Raikkonen then passed him again. However, Raikkonen quickly lost control on the wet track. A crash took him out of the race for good with less than five laps to go.

Spa Francorchamps in Belgium’s spa region is notorious for its inclement weather. Not only does it rain frequently, the weather tends to turn on a dime. Drivers in the Belgian Grand Prix have come to expect this. Little has changed weather-wise since the very first Belgian Grand Prix in 1925. Drivers are typically prepared for rain. Drivers known for superior wet-weather road-handling skills even welcome it. It’s frequently rain that gives them their edge over less able drivers.

It appears that Lewis Hamilton underestimated the possibility of bad weather. He and nearly every other driver chose dry tires for the race. The only one with foresight seemed to be Renault’s Nelson Piquet Jr. Despite this, it wasn’t enough for a top three placing for Piquet.

Lewis Hamilton managed to recover from some wild spinouts to take first place. He was followed closely by Team Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Team Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld. Ultimately, it was Massa and Team Ferrari that would be declared the winner of the 2008 Belgian Grand Prix. The decision resulted in a two point loss for Hamilton. The loss narrowed the gap between Hamilton and rival Massa to a hair’s breadth.

But Lewis Hamilton’s team have now lodged an appeal and hopes to be reinstated to first – time will tell.

Lewis seems to have an edge compared to some drivers while it’s raining. Unusually for Monaco, May’s Grand Prix around the streets of Monte Carlo were wet after rain, and he went on to win the Monaco Grand Prix.

A chicane is a series of tight semi-circular barriers on a race track. Chicanes are not unique to racing. Town planners may install them in streets. They are designed to slow down the flow of traffic. Ultimately, they are a safety measure. Chicanes are a safety measure on race tracks as well. Hamilton has only a handful of races left in the 2008 in which to make up for the loss at the Belgian Grand Prix. Hamilton’s fans wait eagerly to see if Hamilton will be able to recover. Fans of sidelined driver Raikkonen feel, on the other hand, that justice was served. Raikkonen may have taken the race if not for his unfortunate crash. Raikkonen has won the World Championship three out of the last four years, but he may not win this year if Lewis Hamilton continues to drive as he has been doing this year.

Both Ferrari drivers are hoping for better grip with their Bridgestone’s tires but are not complaining on their decent balance fuel load. Just like them Lewis Hamilton hopes for better grip in the Q3 Turkish track. The McLaren team is just not getting enough down force in high speed corners even with prime tires.

Team Redbull is the closest competitor for Team Brawn GP for the constructor’s championship trailing behind the leader with almost 44 points. The pole position from Sebastian Vettel is the team’s kiss of life of ever trying to creep up behind Team Brawns lead. Aside from that its Sebastian Vettel’s chances of closing into 2nd place driver’s championship lead Ruben Barrichello. So far Team Brawn is the F1 fans favorite with Team Red Bull behind. The F1 giants Ferrari and McLaren needs to win this race to pick up their performance and regained their legendary predecessor status. This race is definitely going to be a good one between Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button.

Other noteworthy features include direct fuel injection, which is a first for the mid-rear mounted engine, along with the unique but typical flat-plane crank that has been a staple for Ferrari for many years.

Stopping distance of only 107 feet from 62 miles per hour is also a new record for this line. It is enabled by having the brake pads moved into light contact with the discs on liftoff. This a new prefill feature which minimizes delay when the brakes are again applies.
