Hopes of a championship win were centred on Red Bull’s Mark Webber, or Ferari’s Fernando Alonso, at the final race on 14th November. There was also an outside chance of Mc Laren’s Lewis Hamilton taking the crown.
But it wasn’t to be. Sebastian Vettel led from the beginning, but it was clear that Lewis was very close, and challenging him all the time. That was until Lewis pitted, and then came out into traffic. He was held up , which enabled Vettel to consolidate his lead, whilst Webber and Alonso also ran into problems, and could not get high enough up the field.
By the time everyone had made their pit stops, Lewis regained second position, but Vettel had a very comfortable lead. It is to his credit that with a clear track ahead of him, Lewis became much faster, and narrowed the gap between them, but there was just not enough laps left for him to challenge Vettel again.
It could have been a much more interesting race if he had not been held up, because his speed was certainly there, and I think the ruling should be that no-one can opportune pit stops, which only serves to ruin the race.
Vettel is now World Champion, and also the youngest, previously Lewis was the youngest after winning in 2008. There will be much celebrating by the Red Bull Team, as they have a double win after also winning the Constructors Championship.
